14 Design Tips For Your New Bathroom

Your bathroom is an important room in your home. And whenit comes to renovating there are a number of things to consider.

To guide you through your next bathroom renovation here are 14 design tips to help you create your ideal bathroom.

1. Know What a Bathroom Remodel Costs

Before you begin any project, it’s important to put your expectations into perspective when it comes to how much money you’re willing to invest.

The size of your bathroom, the quality of materials you want to include and whether you’re planning to do some of the labor yourself all can affect the cost of a remodel.

Make sure you have a definite budget. Be clear about how much money you have to spend on your bathroom renovation.

Having a definite budget will force you to monitor and make sensible decisions about your choice of items.

Bathrooms, or any renovation, will tend to blow out in cost because there are so many beautiful products and items you can buy today.

If you know your budget then you can determine if you can afford a stone bath or a free standing bath before you go looking at baths.

Understand roughly how much tiling you will require in square metres. You may find you have sourced the most amazing tile, but tile prices vary wildly and each square metre can add hundreds to your costs on top of the general building costs.

Be sensible in your selection of your products. There are many alternatives available today that will allow you to save but still deliver on the style and quality of bathroom you desire.

Knowing what you require will stop you from swaying from the final objective – a built bathroom to your budget.

2. Don’t Make the Toilet the First Thing You See When You Open the Door

Ask a bathroom designer what his or her best tried and true tip is, and this is what you’re likely to hear.

The reasoning is simple.

Often bathroom doors get left open, meaning that you or any guest in your home walking by will see the toilet — which isn’t the most eye-catching thing you want people to look at. aesthetically pleasing thing to look at.

If you’re hoping for a spa-like vibe, putting the toilet front and centre in the design can sort of kill the mood as you’re transitioning into the room.

Make anything but the toilet the focal point.

3. Plan a Lighting Scheme

Light is the most important element in bathroom design.

If you think about all the things you will be doing in the bathroom with make-up, washing your face then lighting is very important.

The best approach to a well-lit space is to incorporate layers of task, accent, ambient and decorative lighting.

Consult with your bathroom designer or lighting specialist about getting your lighting right.

In order of importance for your bathroom, think about lighting first, then the creation of a feeling of space and then thirdly the use of beautiful items such as tiles, sinks and baths.

If light is not an option, a dramatic or beautiful tile is important as a feature.

4. Understand Standard Bathroom Dimension

Know and understand the space you have to work with.

Knowing a few key measurements, like the size of a typical bathtub and how much space is needed for a toilet, will help you plan your remodel more efficiently.

Measure up key areas before you do your product selections.

You will need to be prepared with your dimensions filter out the products that won't be right for you

5. Plan the Right Height for Your Vanity Basin

Typical vanity tops are 80 to 85 centimeters off the floor.

But you need to consider how your basin will add to or take away from the countertop’s height.

If you have an above-counter basin, for example, you’ll want to make your counter height lower so you can wash your hands or brush your teeth comfortably.

It is a good idea with your bathroom renovation is to make a note of what you currently do in the bathroom and how that is handled.

Don’t forget to think about your tap with your vanity. If you are having cabinets above your vanity, think about how you will use your tap, how it fits in relation to your basin and if you can wash your face or clean your teeth easily.

These little things often get missed

6. Pick the Right Vanity

Vanities aren’t just for looks.

Get one too big and you could mess up your bathroom’s traffic routes.

Too small and you’ll be scrambling for more countertop space and storage.

Pick the wrong material and you could have maintenance issues on your hands.

7. Have More Than One Way of Drying Out Your Bathroom

Remember there is a lot of steam water and heat in your bathroom. Having a good airflow is important.

Reducing mold and mildew begins with removing moisture.

To do that it’s best to have a variety of options: a great fan that vents to the outside (not into an attic) and an operable window.

8. Bathroom storage

Storage can make or break a bathroom especially if your bathroom is on the smaller side.

To make the most of the space, opt for a generously sized vanity to stash everything you need.

A floating construction will also serve to visually enhance the feeling of space in a small bathroom.

9. Make It Seamless:

Using the same marble on the floor and walls makes for a space that is open, indulgent and seamless in appearance.

You can do the same with tiles or perhaps a concrete finish

10. Write Down a List Of What Your Don’t Like

First write down a list of what you don’t like in your bathroom. This is a good step to ensuring that you arrive at what you want in your bathroom.

Then write another two lists: your must-haves and your desires.

After that, it's a matter of seeing what the budget extends to

11. Select Material That Are Easy To Clean

One important consideration that sometimes gets overlooked is: how easy is it to clean?

Now that you have a wonderful new bathroom you don’t want to spend all your free time cleaning it.

This is vital to think about this when you're selecting materials

12. Have All Your Items Delivered Early

Make sure all your taps, basins, and tiles are delivered to your home and checked by your contractor before they are stored ready for use.

If your tiles have come to the house in a cracked state and are then stored without checking the boxes before they are needed, your building program will be held back while you try to organise more - not to mention the argument that will ensue with the supplier that the damage has happened onsite.

Having everything organised will save you a huge amount of time and headache later.

13. Allow Three Months To Build or Renovate

The actual building process will take three to four weeks, all going smoothly.

But there are a lot of planning and design processes that need to occur before you get to that stage, so allow three months.

When you factor in the time it will take to select the materials, visit different locations, a bathroom renovation is a lengthy process.

14. Know The Building Codes

Always be aware that codes, standards and certificates apply and will be required upon completion.

Check with the local council or contractor to make sure everything is in order for your renovation.

These 15 Tips will help you plan and execute a successful bathroom renovation.
