5 Key Steps For Styling Your Bed

December 20, 2022

5 Key Steps For Styling Your Bed

The bed is the focal point of any bedroom and creates a cosy atmosphere that makes leaving the bed irresistible.

This is made all the more challenging when your bed is adorned with luxurious bed linen, comfy pillows and stylish throws and cushions.

But let's face it there is nothing better than walking into your bedroom and seeing that beautifully made bed decorated with pillows, cushions and throws.

Freshly made bed

There is some work involved but having a glorious-looking bed is a nice part of being in your home.

These insider tips will help you make your bed look beautiful.

To style your bed it is important to break it down into 5 key areas:

#1 Doona

You need to start with the doona.

A smart look is to fold the doona way down the bed.

The top half of your bed is on show, and the bottom half is covered with your doona.

You can either fold the doona under itself or roll it forward over itself.

Gone are the days when the doona ran all the way to the head of the bed with pillows popped on top.

You may have done a small roll-down of the doona in the past but now you want to see a touch of the sheet at the head of the bed.

The major fold of the doona will allow you to see your glorious sheets.

If you're a fan of prints or you just like switching up looks on the regular, then it makes sense to invest in a reversible doona cover.

It not only provides two design options but adds a pretty additional feature to a bed when the top of the doona is turned down.

#2 Sheets

Sheets are no longer an afterthought when it comes to how to style a bed. They've moved well beyond white.

Why not think beyond white and start to explore other colour palettes?

To get the crisp, clean, hotel bed look, you should invest in pure cotton high thread-count bed linen – the benefits are tenfold.

Firstly, 100 per cent cotton products are naturally breathable so they help to regulate your temperature and moisture levels, stopping the clammy feeling you can experience with synthetic fibres.

Secondly, high thread count fabrics are smoother against the skin, so as well as being much more comfortable, you are less likely to feel tangled up or trapped by rougher fabrics that cling, especially to nightwear.

This raises two other points:

One, you should buy two sheet sets and mix and match them on your bed. You don't have to have your fitted sheet and flat sheet in the same colour.

The same goes for your pillows. Start to think of the bed as many individual parts all coming together to create the whole. Rather than just buying one set and using just that.

Two, think about patterns.

You could easily do a flat doona cover, for example, and then have a dramatic sheet scenario.

Think of something like animal prints and enjoy the vibrance it can bring to the bed.

#3 Pillows

When it comes to styling pillows, think outside the box. You don't have to sit them up perfectly.

You don't want large gaps in your pillow arrangement. It looks cheap and nobody wants to look cheap

Consider laying pillows on their back on one side of the bed, it's a great way to bring a little interest and variance to your bed styling situation.

Decorative pillows can also be used for additional support while sitting up in bed to read.

They would be used behind the nighttime pillow to ensure they don’t get dirty.

You have to have at least six pillows at the head of your bed. That's for a double or queen bed. You want two Euro pillows against the headboard, and four standard pillows in front of them.

If you're in a king-sized bed, you'll need three European pillows at the head of the bed to make it feel full.

#4 Cushions

Cushions are great at eliminating gaps between pillows and are a lovely way of bringing the full bedroom design together.

Choose a colour, motif, or style from your bedroom design and recreate this in the cushion design.

Layering cushions are essential for a super stylish, well-presented bed. But how many, exactly?

Go for somewhere between three and six cushions depending on the width of the bed and preference,

Always group them together by size, with the largest at the back and the smallest at the front.

Biggest to smallest, back to front. This simple rule ensures that the selection of fabrics and colours of the decorative pillows are all highlighted

Think softly curved cushions with pom-pom detailing for ethereal-inspired bedrooms, Mongolian sheepskin cushions for rustic, cottagecore spaces, and slightly rough-hewn cushions for the more desert-inspired dwellings

That plump, karate-chopped cushion look can only be achieved if the insert is feather

Let's consider the cushion size and quantity at the head of the bed.

Think of at least 50cm cushions on display in front of your pillows. One in front of each standard pillow for a more uniform look, or go three across the bed for a more packed-in, sumptuous feel.

Suggested Cushion Ratios

Single bed: One large cushion and one bolster cushion

Double bed: Two large cushions, two small bolster cushions and one small square cushion

Vary the sizes, colours and textures of decorative pillows. The different sizes and colours provide interest and variation.

Decorative pillows pull colours from around the room, giving them purpose

#5 Throws

The end of the bed should have a throw scattered over the end of it.

Throws are still a great styling device for beds, but ensure it's not too neatly folded along the bottom of the bed. Throws should look more informal, and casually draped over the corner.

When it comes to adding throws and blankets onto the bed, it’s all about creating soft, textural layering. Loosely draped across the bottom third of the mattress where it strikes a balance between structured styling and laid-back décor,

Don't just stick to one colour – similar to a bedspread, combining two throws in a mixture of colours and textures can work wonderfully too.

The exact type of throw is up to you but always opt for a larger one than a smaller option. There's nothing sadder than a large king-size bed with a little throw sitting at the end of it all on its lonesome.

With a little bit of creativity and thinking, you can create a stylish design on your bed that gives your bedroom that special touch.
